MAD was commissioned to design the environmental graphics for the NYU Physics Department which relocated to three floors at 726 Broadway. A complete wayfinding strategy was developed for the 98,000sf project which featured lenticular printed graphics at the connecting stairs that animated the main connection between the 8th, 9th and 10th floors. The design work was developed to highlight different components of the physics realm and through a series of client meetings, our design proposals were developed to include key formulas that were selected by department faculty members. These were used as distraction markers on the many glazed surfaces that are found at meeting areas or transition spaces between subdivisions of the multiple floors.
The various departments were identified, and wayfinding was introduced to encourage efficient transiting through the floors. The work was integrated into an ongoing construction project in collaboration with Mitchell Giurgola Architects.
