We were retained by The Hunter College Foundation to convert and renovate a portion of the 6th floor at the North Building where an outdated rehearsal hall was located. The 2,200sf space is primarily designed for use by Hunter College’s Music Department and will additionally afford the College a black box theater space for programming flexibility. An improved approach and lobby provide access to the main rehearsal space, featuring a motorized retractable riser system for its 100-person orchestra and choir. Additionally, movable platforms allow for various other performance seating configurations. Instructional AV/ IT solutions along with a video projection system were integrated within the acoustical design of the room. Musical instrument storage areas supplement the rehearsal space, completing the educational requirements for a functioning classroom that can be flexibly used for many types of special events. All existing window openings were fitted with acoustic glass panels that permit natural light without compromising the integrity of the room.
